One of a annual series of travel publicity booklets issued by the LNER this, the 1939 London booklet, would turn out effectively to be the last in a long line. When, later in 1939, WW2 broke out such publicity ceased and holiday travel such as promoted by this booklet was actively discouraged. The LNER had a large ‘stable’ or artists and designers and the company is often regarded as being the most ‘go ahead’ of the four mainline railways of the time in terms of graphic design and advertising. This cover is more pictorial than many of their others, showing St Pauls Cathedral looking up Ludgate Hill. The artist is shown as Bateman, who will be James Bateman who appeared to do only this one work for the company – it was also issued as a full size poster.
