When more than 800 people drowned last month in the Mediterranean’s worst modern shipwreck, Ibrahim Mbalo almost joined the dead at the bottom of the sea. As the boat began to sink below the surface, Mbalo, a 20-year-old Gambian labourer, was trapped underwater below decks, unable to escape.
