"This bush filled with birds of several kinds was painted by Marcus Blackden in 1891. It comes from the same wall of the tomb of Khnumhotep as the fishing scene and is itself only part of a larger scene of the tomb owner catching birds in a net. A variety of species is shown, each rendered in great detail by the Egyptian artists and captured skilfully by the Fund’s copyist. The drawing was published as the frontispiece to the fourth volume of the Beni Hasan series. At the top left is a part of the rope used by Khnumhotep to close his net, and the line across the bottom represents the top of the doorway leading to the shrine, which housed a statue of the deceased. A second bush at the other side of the net contains further species of bird which were reproduced individually by Carter." – taken from ‘The Archaeological Survey’ by Christopher Naunton in The EES: the early years (http://ift.tt/1K0zwpt).
