Book ends of partial cross section of Petrified Araucaria Pine, from Arizona, U.S.A. Grew in the time of the dinosaurs, 160 million years ago. Northern Arizona was ten swamp land, and has since been thrust upward several thousand feet. Araucarias grow in the wold in the Andes and on Norfolk Island off the coast of Australia. Ornamental species in cultivation are the Bunya-Bunya. (A. bidwilli), the Norfolk Island Pine (A. exelsa), and the Monkey Puzzle (A. Imbricata).
