26-G-2963: Normandy Invasion, June 1944. Violent Storm Battered Normandy Breakwater of Sunken Freighters during Invasion Landings. Reducing the violence of a storm that blew in upon Normandy invasion operations soon after D-Day, a breakwater of sunken freighters shielded Allied landings and cut down the toll of destruction. Coast Guard officers, thoroughly briefed in their job, helped direct the planned sinking of 23 ships to form a breakwater. Photographed from a Coast Guard LCI (L) shows a mountainous wave spending its fury against the bulwark, June 1944. (5/19/2015).
