The new Chicago Fire Academy was dedicated in May 1961, and in view of its many outstanding and unique facilities, promptly nicknamed "The West Point of the Fire Department." The Snorkel pictured in front of it was conceived by Chicago’s Fire Commissioner, Robert J. Quinn, and Chicago was the first City to have this extraordinary and efficient fire fighting and rescue device.
