Another of Nick Agnew’s photos from the mid-1970s and this shows London Transport RT 3567 (MLL 877) on the long lost 39 route to Southfields Station in south west London. The bus is headed west along Victoria St towards Victoria station and is passing the site of redevelopments that engulfed the whole of this section of road at the time. Clearly in view is the building that would itself soon be redeveloped – that of the then Army & Navy Cooperative store on the corner of Wilcox Place. The new store constructed is still there as House of Fraser but it is amazing how many people still refer to it as ‘the Army & Navy’ – a testiment to HoF’s foolishness at attempting to rebrand most of their original stores names! The A&N have a long history and as the name suggests it’s main market was for many years aimed at the ‘colonial types’ and they supplied not only the UK but many far flung places providing a little bit of ‘home’ to those far away from Victoria St.
