A scan – so a little grainy – of the Market place in the small Lancashire borough of Heywood, c1955. Probably taken on a Sunday this junction was where the Rochdale – Bury road (A58) met that coming up from Middleton. The high street has the usual small shops, including a branch of Timothy Whites & Taylors, chemists later merged into Boots. The street lighting is suspended from disused tram poles – the service having finished and been replaced by a joint service of buses from Rochdale and Bury in c1930.
