How many times did I look and see that coat of arms as a school child? From 1965 until 1972 the County Borough of West Bromwich were responsible for educating me – at Hampstead J&I School, followed by Dartmouth High School – and this caot of arms was above the school stage during assembly, on our exercise book covers and on the side of the buses that took us to secondary school! Labor omnia vincit – work conquers all.

The old County Borough seemed to do well with me, educationally, so I should be thankful to them. The Borough was merged into the new Sandwell Council on 1 April 1974.and so passed into history.
